Cologne Bonn Airport is advancing its transition towards climate-friendly infrastructure. The airport is investing €33.25 million in five major projects and has secured record EU funding of €9.75 million under the “Connecting Europe Facility Transport” programme.

The investment package focuses on further electrifying aircraft handling on the aprons, expanding charging infrastructure and integrating renewable energy. A total of 38 additional charging points will be installed on the aprons, alongside 86 new charging stations across the airport site and further charging facilities for electric buses. Transformer capacity will also be expanded.

Two agri-photovoltaic systems will be integrated into the airport’s power grid. In addition, 16 pre-conditioned air units will be installed at the terminals, enabling aircraft to be heated or cooled at the stand without running auxiliary power units. The airport will also procure 15 electric ground power units to replace conventional diesel equipment.

“We are taking ambitious next steps towards a sustainable development of the airport,” says Thilo Schmid, CEO of Flughafen Köln/Bonn GmbH. “Expanding modern energy and charging infrastructure also strengthens the performance of our location.”

Once completed, the projects are expected to reduce CO₂e emissions by around 6,000 tonnes per year. Net Zero Carbon is targeted by 2035 for the aprons and by 2045 for the entire airport. For Cologne as a MICE destination, this underlines strong and sustainable international connectivity.
