The history of Tanzbrunnen Köln
In 1950, the architect Josef Op Gen Orth built a fountain in the complex with a walk-in rondel in the middle, which also serves as a dance floor - hence the name "Tanzbrunnen". With a diameter of almost 55 metres, the fountain covers a water surface area of around 2,000 m².
For the 1957 Federal Garden Show, Professor Frei Otto developed the star wave tent as one of his first tent roof constructions (a few years later, he also created the world-famous roof construction of the Munich Olympic Stadium). The construction, which was bold for the time, spanned the circular area of the Tanzbrunnen and parts of the open spaces. "Dancing under the starry wave tent" became a well-known motto. The grounds and the fountain were completely renovated for the Federal Garden Show in 1971 and have been continually added to and restored ever since.
